Save the Bobby Moore Bridge tile murals
The tile murals are on the walls of the subway at the foot of the Wembley Park Station steps, giving a safe pedestrian route to Olympic Way. They were specially designed to show scenes from famous sports and entertainment events held at the Stadium (since 1923) and Arena (since 1934).
The subway and murals were opened in September 1993 by Bobby Moore’s widow, who unveiled a plaque (set into the mural showing England footballers playing at the “twin towers” stadium) naming the bridge and subway in honour of her husband, who had died of cancer a few months earlier.
The tile murals have been covered over with vinyl advertising sheets since October 2013, but in none of the Council's previous planning, or other, decisions relating to this advertising has the existence of the tile murals ever been referred to or considered.
The tile murals are a major piece of public art, reflecting the historic and cultural importance of Wembley Park as "the Venue of Legends". They should be put back on permanent public display, so that they can be enjoyed by residents and the millions of visitors to Wembley who use the subway each year.
