Traffic calming and traffic restriction measures for Chamberlayne Road, Kensal Rise, NW10
We implore the Council to:
1) Install speed cameras to deter speeding and reduce the
unacceptably high number of collisions; and
2) Install traffic restrictions to reduce the volume of traffic -
60%, according to an Imperial College study - using Chamberlayne
Road as a cut through route.
Chamberlayne Road is a narrow single carriageway in the Queens Park
Ward, cutting through a pre-dominantly residential neighbourhood
with two schools on its route. It is designated by the Department
of Transport as a minor unclassified road intended only for local
traffic.
Despite its minor road status, over 11,500 heavy double-decker
buses use it every week and about 90,000 vehicles every month.
Chamberlayne Road does not have the capacity to safely host such
volumes of traffic along with pedestrians and cyclists.
Congestion often brings traffic to a standstill. Frustrated drivers
attempt dangerous overtaking. At quieter times speeding is
commonplace despite the 20 MPH limit.
Between January 2017 and June 2023, there were an incredible 85
collisions along the 0.9 mile stretch. Compare this to other key
roads in the ward: Salusbury Road (47 collisions), Harvist Road (13
collisions). (Source: TfL).
It needs to stop.
Installing speed cameras and restrictions on traffic volumes would
do the following:
1) Deter speeding drivers and motorcyclists.
2) Reduce the number of collisions.
3) Keep schoolchildren safe.
4) Improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and local residents who
are exposed to air pollution.
We need action now for the wellbeing of residents, schoolchildren
and other road users i.e. cyclists.
