Road Safety Improvement: Zebra Crossing at The Avenue / Tiverton Road Roundabout
The zebra crossing on The Avenue sits directly on the exit of the Tiverton Road mini-roundabout. Drivers leaving the roundabout are looking right for oncoming traffic while turning, and reach the crossing almost immediately, with very little time or distance to see and react to someone stepping out.
This layout creates severe blind spots. Pedestrians waiting at the kerb, especially children, are often hidden by parked vehicles, street furniture and the angle of the turn, and drivers accelerating out of the roundabout have little opportunity to stop. Pedestrians in turn find it hard to judge which way a vehicle will exit.
The crossing is used every day by large numbers of school children walking to and from local schools, as well as parents with buggies, older residents and people using Tiverton Green. Near misses are common, and residents are concerned that it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured.
We ask Brent Council to:
1. Carry out an urgent road safety audit of the crossing and
roundabout, including observation at school drop-off and pick-up
times.
2. Relocate the zebra crossing to a position set back from the
roundabout exit, giving drivers clear sight lines and adequate
stopping distance.
3. Consider supporting measures such as a raised table, improved
lighting and signage, and parking restrictions near the crossing to
improve visibility.
4. Share the findings and proposed actions with local residents and
schools.
