Undertake road safety improvements at the junction of College Road and Mortimer Road

We the undersigned petition the council to Remove the gate and all associated street furniture, which currently is in place to narrow the access points in order to prevent large vehicles such as HGVs from gaining access, except through the middle gate. Instead create a normal road junction and also take appropriate modern measures to restrict large vehicles such as fitting a height restriction barrier and cameras.

Whilst the access gate was originally provided to enable the emergency services to gain access, over the last few years, this has been subject to abuse mainly through drivers of large vehicles opening and driving through the gate and not closing it after. Consequently vehicles then go through the gate entrance from either direction, thereby creating conditions for accidents to occur. I (as the petitioner) was nearly knocked down by the driver of a Range Rover trying to avoid a queue of traffic a few years ago. When I visited the site with a local councillor on 9 July, we both witnessed a lorry nearly reversing into a cyclist. This is a dangerous junction and someone will be seriously hurt unless urgent improvements are undertaken.
