Make Kensal Triangle Safe: End the Morning Gridlock
The problem: our neighbourhood is being used as a shortcut
Kensal Triangle is a grid of residential streets with Harrow Road
on the south side, the railway on the north, and Kilburn Lane on
the east. There is no way out of it to Kilburn Lane - those streets
were blocked off many years ago. Therefore, vehicles entering the
Triangle are either local residents returning home, or people
accessing local residents or businesses, or drivers trying to get
past a queue of vehicles on Harrow Road. This scheme is designed to
address that last category.
For many years the Triangle has been used as a "relief valve" for
Harrow Road congestion. Apps like Waze and Google Maps are
funnelling hundreds of non-local drivers through our narrow
residential streets every day. Our roads weren't built for this
volume of traffic, and the result is gridlock, frustrated drivers,
additional pollution, and unsafe conditions for everyone who
actually lives here. Vehicles entering the Triangle to try to beat
the queue on Harrow Road go along Wakeman Road, then turn right
down Berens Road, Halstow Road or Compton Road, then turn left into
Pember Road, and right on Wellington Road, to rejoin Harrow
Road.
The gains for drivers are marginal, but the downside for Kensal Triangle is huge. It suffers from a mix of speeding vehicles and/or gridlock, starting in Wellington Road and backing up along Pember and adjoining roads, depending on how bad the traffic is on any given day.
Prioritising children’s safety
The morning rush hour happens exactly when children are walking to
school. Having aggressive, "cut-through" traffic racing down narrow
streets creates a high-risk environment. We believe no child should
have to dodge commuters trying to save thirty seconds on their ETA.
This petition supports Brent’s "Vision Zero" goal: a future
where no one is killed or seriously injured on our roads.
Resident access comes first
To be clear: this is not a closure. Residents, businesses,
visitors, and delivery drivers will still have full access to the
Triangle via Warfield Road and Wellington Road. We are not locking
ourselves in or keeping people out; we are simply removing the
"shortcut" incentive for people who don't live here. By stopping
the through-traffic on Wakeman Road, we make it easier, not harder,
for residents to get in and out of their own neighbourhood.
Cleaner Air, Quieter Streets
Constant stop-start traffic and idling engines during peak hours
mean our air quality is suffering. By reducing the number of cars
using our streets as a bypass, we can lower pollution levels and
return the Triangle to the quiet, residential community it is meant
to be.
Why This Works (Without Hurting Our Neighbours)
Vehicles needing access to streets in the Triangle can still get
in, via Warfield Road and Wellington Road. They are perfect for
local access but don't attract through-traffic. Residents can still
drive out via Wellington Road, Berens Road or Wakeman Road. And all
of that will be easier because there will be no more gridlock and
speeding traffic in the Triangle. "Shortcut" traffic will simply
stay on Harrow Road. Navigation apps will stop advising drivers to
use the Triangle as a shortcut.
So whether you are a car driver, a walker or cyclist living in the
Triangle, this simple scheme will benefit you!
