We the undersigned petition the council to Urgent action to repair and upgrade damaged pavements across Brent to make them safe, accessible, and long-lasting 1. Conduct a full borough-wide pavement safety audit and publish an improvement plan with clear timelines. 2. Prioritise urgent repairs on streets where pavements are cracked, uneven, or obstructed, posing risks to pedestrians, especially the elderly and disabled. 3. Ensure that all future resurfacing work uses durable, long-lasting materials that prevent early deterioration. 4. Set up an easy, transparent reporting and tracking system for residents to see when reported pavement issues will be fixed.

Across Brent, pavements have become dangerously uneven, with broken slabs, potholes, and poor-quality patchwork repairs. Residents across multiple wards have complained for years about trip hazards, loose slabs, and blocked access routes — yet little has been done.

Some streets, residents report, have not had pavements repaired in over 30 years. Examples include:

• Green Close (NW9) – where no one can walk on one side due to the elevated mound with cracks and pushchairs and wheelchairs struggle to pass.

• Hill Drive (NW9) – with long stretches of damaged pavements and rotting tree stumps.

• Dartmouth Road (NW2) – which has deep cavities and holes where repeated falls have been reported with hospitalisation.

While Brent Council has indicated that only roads with over 80% of pavements rated “poor” qualify for repair, we believe this standard overlooks serious safety risks that affect our community. Many streets that fall just short of this threshold remain unsafe, particularly for vulnerable residents, and deserve immediate attention.

This neglect endangers everyone, but particularly:

• Elderly residents, who are at high risk of falling;

• Parents with prams or pushchairs, who struggle to navigate uneven surfaces;

• Wheelchair users and disabled residents, who often cannot pass safely.

This is unacceptable when local people pay council tax for the upkeep and safety of their neighbourhoods.
Improving our pavements will:

• Reduce accidents and NHS admissions from trips and falls;

• Encourage walking and use of public transport;

• Beautify our borough and restore pride in our local streets.

We therefore call on Brent Council to prioritise a borough-wide programme to fix and future-proof Brent’s pavements, ensuring safe, accessible, and attractive streets for all.
