Protect off-lead walking for dogs in Paddington Old Cemetery
We the undersigned petition the council to thank Councillors Butt & Donnelly-Jackson for pausing the implementation of the ban on dogs exercising off-lead in Paddington Old Cemetery, as they are currently allowed to do, pending a consultation on the future management of the cemetery. As responsible dog walkers, we understand the importance of dogs being exercised in a manner appropriate to the location. Many of us visit family graves AND enjoy seeing our dogs exercise off leash.
We call on Brent Council to ensure that the forthcoming consultation is fair, open, transparent & balanced, and that the Friends of Paddington Old Cemetery are involved in its design.
We further ask Brent Council to establish a joint consultative committee for the cemetery with the Friends of Paddington Old Cemetery & other stakeholders. Given the importance of this green space to the whole community we are calling for open lines of communication to ensure constructive debates on the management of the cemetery and any future plans.
As one of the few places in the area that allows dogs off lead, POC has become a social hub for dog owners. It offers space for community bonding and mutual support among residents. Restricting dogs to on-lead only would discourage many from visiting, as dogs require the freedom to run and exercise, which is crucial for their physical health.
Removing the ability to walk dogs off lead in POC would lead to a decline in the mental and physical health and well-being of many Brent residents. The community benefits from the access to nature that POC provides and the camaraderie among dog walkers.
