Our Response

Residents raised concerns about Lack of effective communication and consultation regarding Community Skips and related resident benefits. Council does not appear to publicise Community Skips through leaflets or emails. Residents’ Associations are not consulted on skip locations.

Response from: Wembley Neighbourhood Managers

Our Community Skip locations are moved around each ward in order that over time as many residents as possible within the ward benefit from the service.  Neighbourhood Managers make the final decision on the location of their Community Skips, following input from and discussion with local ward Councillors, and the use of flytip data gathered through our Fix My Street reporting tool.

The Community Skips are advertised in the Brent magazine, which continues to be delivered to every home in Brent, and also advertised on the Council’s website - https://www.brent.gov.uk/bins-rubbish-and-recycling/community-skips

Neighbourhood Managers and Ward Councillors advertise the event as widely as possible through their respective contact networks, such as WhatsApp groups.

Laminated event posters are also displayed in advance around the area of each Community Skip location.

Clarification requested on enforcement and trends related to fly-tipping penalties-especially on whether offenders are paying the fixed penalty notices issued for fly-tipping. Request was made for comparison of the number of fixed penalty notices for fly-tipping against last year’s figures.

Our payment rate is usually between 55-58% on average. It has remained at this level for the past 2 years.

The other %

  • Reduced to warning
  • Escalated to a caution
  • Cancelled due to representation
  • Sent to legal for prosecution

Resident requested additional information regarding litter-picking resources and potential funding (equipment or community initiatives).

Response from: Wembley Neighbourhood Managers

Some residents like to litter pick on their own or as part of a community initiative arranged by residents. This could take the form of residents from one particular road focussing on their own street.

Brent Council Neighbourhood Managers work with local residents and groups around arrangements for litter picks.  We can provide waste bags and the provision of litter pickers on a short-term basis.  Your Neighbourhood Manager would agree locations where bags of waste can be left which our waste contractors would then collect shortly after the conclusion of the organised pick.

Alternatively, residents can also apply for a Love Where You Live grant to cover the cost of purchasing litter picking equipment, including gloves, hi visibility tabards, waste sack rings, bags and litter pickers.  Here is a link to the grant application page of our website with more information around making a funding application - https://www.brent.gov.uk/neighbourhoods-and-communities/community-funding-and-support/love-where-you-live-grant
