Build makerspace for young people (8 to 17 yrs) to learn, invent and become entrepreneurs
We the undersigned petition the council to Support in building makerspaces in Brent. A makerspace will have facilities such as 3d printers, sensors, motors, micro-controllers and computers. It will also have experts to mentor and guide young people so that they can learn, tinker, play, experiment, invent new products and solve real problems.
85% of jobs in 2030 – 11 years from now - haven’t been invented yet according to research by Institute for the Future authored by a panel of 20 tech, business and academic experts. In fact, according to research by Capital Economics, UK needs an additional 38,000 people with digital skills every year to meet the demands of our economy. Unfortunately, however, most schools are struggling to offer high-quality tech education, a big part of necessary 21-century skills.
We all consume technology every day - oyster cards, contactless, phones, Netflix, YouTube - without really understanding how it works. For young people, however, it's not good enough to just be consumers of this tech, they need to understand how it works so that they can influence technology in a positive way and in fact, build meaningful products using technology and solve hard real-life problems.
I'd love to build a makerspace which will have facilities such as 3d printers, sensors, motors, micro-controllers and computers. It will also have experts to mentor and guide young people so that they can learn, tinker, play, experiment, invent new products and solve real problems.
Building a makerspace will bring like-minded people together, has the power to inspire young people, help develop their interest in technology and keep them away from negative influences so that they can use their time and energy to create, become entrepreneurs and in-turn inspire others.
